The id is the part we all start off with as babies.
Freud's explanation is the superego is that is the internalisation of the rules and social constructs of our parents and comes about as we are constantly told what we can't do. Particularly with respect to sexual desires.

According to Freud every boy want to sexually possess his mother. But his mother belongs to his father. Thus he envies his father and wants to kill him so that he can have his mother. However he also want to be like his father and so listens to what he says. The superego rises out of the "Oedipus Complex" and stops society destroying itself.

Girls have something similar called the "Electra Complex" and it revolves around "penis envy".

The superego is what is commonly termed the 'conscience', the ego is the conscious part of our minds and the id is the bit that drives all our desires that we don't often satisfy.

Word of warning: Freud only worked with one group of neurotics from one particular area in Venice and most of his ideas have since been modified or completely discounted.

Freud believed the subconcious was divided into 3 parts, the ego, superego, and the id.

The id consists of hedonistic pleasures and the superego consists of rules and guilt.

The id and superego are constantly doing battle against eachother, so the ego regulates over it all to acheive a balance, stopping a man from raping every girl he sees or crying and screaming everytime he killed a fly.
