Read a book by Seth Godin, "All Marketers are Liars"
He essentially agrees with you.

Ethics and truth aside, every marketer is selling to your fantasy, your imagination, your hopes and dreams. And we all know, reality is never perfect like fantasy.

Godin's point is, don't just blame the evil advertiser.... we have to willingly participate. I mean really, will Calgon "take you away" ?

Will Victoria's Secret turn you into a willowy model?

Does wine taste better if it comes from a cork-top bottle instead of a screw top? What if we drink it from a $20 glass instead of a $1 glass? Are $225 shoes really "better" than "10" KMart specials?

Sure, we all lie, all the time, especially to ourselves.

I think the previous response was really cool, but I would like to add that advertising only shows the good sides of the product and not the bad side, (only the pros and not the cons) As adverts are meant to entice customers and make them patronise the product (obviously) it would be very difficult doing this, showing both sides of the coin.

Broad generalizations are hardly ever accurate. Some advertisements stretch the truth; most don't.

i don't know if i'd use the word "false" (for some advertising, but not all) but i would say that all advertising is somewhat "misleading." i think that's a better word for it. but let's face it, SOME advertising is flat out false.
