It's smart that you put "goths" in quotes, because you're not talking about real goths, you're talking about teenagers who have taken on the gothic persona without really knowing what its about. They do it as a fad, to stand out while fitting it. Real goths, who are rarely teenagers, tend to have had some bad experiences that made them confront death and pain. They accept these things as a part of their reality, but they don't pretend to be fond of them, which is what teen "goths" do. After all, how could you? A couple of goths I know have good reason to be acquainted with the darker side of humanity, one ran away from home at 15 and was disowned by his family, and has always just barely gotten by, yet he's not overly dramatic about his trials. Another has almost no family left and is dying of a genetic disease, she sees all the pain and darkness in the world, but tries to make the most out of each day. That is what real goths are like, not teens going "oh, woe is me, no one understands me."

Its an affectation more than anything else. These kids are playing a part in life, trying to establish their own identities. Many of them feel "different" and this is their way of defining their "uniqueness". Which is ironic because being a goth is nothing more than conforming to a group in its own way anyway! They usually grow out of it. The obsession with death and darkness simply comes with the package. But don't be fooled, just because they come from middle class suburban caucasian households doesn't mean they don't have problems.

goth ain't real. It's a fashion trend. And all the goths I knew did come from upper-middle class homes. Yet most of them were still suicidal. So what causes a well to do middle class person to be suicidal or obsessed with death? If I could anser that, I'd write a book and get rich.

facination with mortality. And quite possibly depresssion. Kids from this background usually have both parents working and laying a guilt trip on them like,"See how much I love you? I make all these sacrifices and work at my miserable job JUST FOR YOU! Are you HAPPY?!" The goth rejects the parents" lifestyle and choices and can be crying out for love and acceptance not felt at home.
And they reall like black.

that's exactly the problem, is that they have no problem. Yet they hear about people all the time who have problems, so they expect themselves to have a problem, but they don't. And that causes a problem. The sad part is that I'm not kidding.

But are they, really? I dont think so. I think they just want to be a part of something, and they dont really believe in what they are doing. Its a fantasy, not real at all, at least for most.

Maybe they really have depression or some similar condition. They're common, and often run in families.
