A contraction is the tightening of the musles around your cervix are and it usually happens when you are going through labour...basically it means your cervix will expand to give way for baby to move down.... Imagine having period cramps at least 10 times stronger... its sort of like that... but its over once baby is coming out...

A contraction stress test is usually done if you have an abnormal biophysical profile. A biophysical profile uses ultrasound during a nonstress test to measure a series of physical characteristics of your baby. During the test, uterine contractions, fetal breathing, fetal muscle tone, fetal movements, and amniotic fluid volume are measured.
If the results of the contraction stress test indicate that the placenta is no longer supporting your baby, immediate delivery is recommended. Labor is started (induced) by giving oxytocin intravenously. In rare cases, a cesarean delivery may be done.
The contraction stress test can stimulate labor.
Contraction stress test results often show abnormal decelerations when your baby is not actually in distress. This is called a false-positive result.
Because nipple stimulation can cause long, uncontrolled contractions, an oxytocin infusion is preferred by some health professionals.

Contractions prepare your body for the hard work of labor and delivery.

They soften and thin the cervix (the “exit route” from the uterus through which the baby passes during delivery).

These contractions tend to increase in the weeks right before your due date.

The contractions make your uterus muscles tighten, at irregular intervals or a “squeezing” in your lower abdomen and groin.

After that, they just keep getting stronger and more painful...........Ouch!

Please when in doubt get it checked. I didn't and was having them. My baby went in fetal distress, and swallowed her meconium. She also had Persistant Pulmonary Hypertension. Was on life support, and in NICU for 5 weeks. Who cares if they think your hypercondriac... just go...

Don't mean to scare you, it was rare complication, she was post due.. Be safe just go.. My contaction did not hurt, just squeezed, thought they were braxton hicks.. I had 3 c-section and never experienced contraction till last one.
