Ultra violet light devices attract the flies, they land on a wire mesh and are electrocuted. Available in hardware shops or on the Internet.
An old fashioned method was to catch the flies in the hand and throw them into a bowl of water. This requires practise as flies take off backwards and the cupped palm must allow for this in a swift movement upwards and away from the flies resting place.
Venus fly trap is a plant which close its petals when a fly ventures inside the flower head. The plant then digests the fly. Available at any garden centre.

I have a venus fly trap and a pitcher plant, but to the best of my knowledge neither have actually caught a fly without my help. I have invested in an electric device (shaped like a tennis bat). You can stun the flies with it, and then if you wanted you could just out them back outdoors. It can kill them but doesn't have to, so from a karma point of view is pretty good.

A long time ago we used a device called a fly swatter. There are plants like Chinaberry and Shoo-fly plant that will repell flies.
"BLACK LOCUS, FALSE ACACIA (Robinia)
This is a beautiful ornamental tree loaded with white fragrant flowers. It is an excellent shade tree with acacia type foliage. The fragrant flowers can be smelled for hundreds of feet in the spring. The bruised foliage mixed with sugar will attract and kill flies. "
There are also non toxic solutions used for horses that will repell flies.

I lived in an area that had a lot of flies and we used to have to hoover our windows every day. We planted some miniature tomatoe plant and after that we didn't see many flies inside the house. (Only problem is the plants smell a bit like cat pee and that is supposedly what keeps the flies away)

Dont know where you are from. But if your from the UK, go to Wilkinsons. Apparently flies hate citrus, but are automatically attracted to it. You can buy these window stickers which look like sunflowers. Stick as many as you like on your windows. When they bang into them they die instantly. They are completely non toxic and smell of oranges. I used them last year as my flatmate is asthmatic and found them to be really effective. Plus you dont have to look at loads of decaying flies scattered around your house!!!!. PS tried a venus fly trap but it did not work too well. It liked the small flies, but I think the blue bottles have got wise to them!!!

I used to work in a restaurant and in the summer had a problem with flies. A hostess suggested we soak the rags we used in a water/vinegar solution and use them to wipe everything down. It works.

I like the idea of the Venus Fly Trap plant - but the fly still ends up dead! Will that upset your friend?
I suggest you try your local garden centre and see if they have any ideas. However, I have found a fascinating website that gives lots of pitfalls of owning one, and how to get round them!
Below that are two sites that sell flytrap plants - the first is in the US, the other in the UK. good luck with your search.

A bunch of dried lavender hung in the room. It gives a good fragrance and keeps flies away.
