Is there someone on top actually holding the boom mic? Or are they controlled remotely from the sound booth?

Oh yes, I forgot, there's more than 1 boom mic on a set.

Actually there are several boom mics on a sitcom set and they are controlled remotely from the sound booth. There's no poor soul that has to sit there and hold up the poles (thank goodness!)

Back in the day, some poor soul with strong steady arms held up a boom mike pole. He was pretty sharp with his skill; you never saw the mike dip into camera view.

Well....not that much, anyway--but it does happen. In fact, I've seen it happen in movies as well.

Today, boom mics are remotely operated, giving the boom mic guy a rest.

There are boom operators who hold the mike.
