Well the thing is, if we place space exploration into the hands of private companies, chances are advertisers, miners, and pollution will follow. Space would become no more empty space to be exploited for personal profit.
And just because all we hear about are NASA's failures, doesn't mean they don't make little discoveries everyday, discoveries that they don't tell the world about.
Look at a scientific research facility. It's nearly the same thing. Funded by government grants, attacked when failed, praised when succeeded. However, if you take a tour, and really ask the scientists what's going on that the public doesn't know about, it's amazing, the advances in technology and research being produced everyday. Jeez just visit www.caltech.edu everyday...they keep posting up newly discovered research. And yes, some of it is funded through the college tuition money, but a lot of it is still from government grants to science.
It's not NASA's fault that space is just so much more foreign and unknown to us that they can't make an amazing miraculous discovery that often. They haven't even developed the technology to properly explore it, unlike all we research here on earth.
Always remember that Dr Seuss's first children's book was rejected by 23 publishers. The 24th publisher sold 6 million copies. Never give up, and you'll find a goldmine that validates everything you've ever done.
So no, I don't think space exploration should be taken away from NASA and carried out by private enterprise.
Did you get this question from Dan Brown's Deception Point, btw?

Deffinately a partnership. There is already a huge movement to begin space tourisim. To follow will be colonies on the moon and mars. After that there will be mining operations... possibly even in the large asteroid belt in our system.
By privatizing we will be introducing competition... much like the old days during the cold war. Only now it is a business and will generate money for stockholders. Meanwhile, Nasa can serve as a guide and aid and maybe even one day the airforce in space.
