I was born in Cornwall and lived in Penzance for 17 years, although spent copious amounts of time in St Ives. It is a beautiful part of the South West penninsula, and is also fairly cultured. If you have a passion for the arts, then you will definetely like it there. There is The Tate and also the Barbara Hepworth museum. There are also many amateur artists selling art at a reasonable price. St Ives offers you beautiful beaches, peace and tranquillity and wonderful cornish pasties!! You can also participate in watersports. The people are incredibly friendly and will make you feel welcome into their community. Socially, there are many good eateries, serving fresh fish, good pubs and even a couple of nightclubs. However, on the downside it can be isolating if you dont drive. If you do your best bet is to head to Penzance for shopping and a more extravagent nightlife. I would also warn you that both visiting and living in Cornwall is now really expensive. I visited a year ago and some of the prices were comparative with London. This is of course due to an increase in tourism. (it can get pretty damn busy in the summer months) However having said that it needs a good economy to survive the winter months. The weather is OK. When its hot, you could almost be in the Carribean, but when it is cold and raining it can feel quite depressing and lonely. To summarise it has both good and bad points, but the good far outway the bad. I myself am seriously thinking about moving back to Cornwall. Given a choice of town I would choose St Ives.

I don't live in St Ives, but I saw your question and wanted to tell you that it is a beautiful, enchanted place.
I have visited it many times over the years, and recommend it. Lucky you to be able to live there.
I expect you know that among other things, St Ives is renowned for the exceptionally pure quality to the light. That's why a lot of artists go there to paint.
The only thing I would say on the other side of this argument is, that although the Cornish are a wonderful bunch of characters, there is a slight tendency for the indigenous Cornish people to treat you as a "foreigner" for the forst 20 years!!! I know this because I was brought up in Devon, which is quite similar in this way, and even as a visitor from Devon I was treated with some suspicion!!
Having said that, St Ives attracts many people passing through or visiting from the wider world, and so there is less of a problem there than in some of the inland villages in the West country.
The other thing is if you are young and like clubbing, then you might be a bit disappointed in life in St Ives. Especially in the winter, seaside towns can be a bit like ghost towns.
But if you are not into steamy night life, winter time in the West country can be wonderful, strolling on sleepy beaches and taking in the balmy air, then going home to a glass of mulled wine by the fire.
I 'm stuck in the smokey rat race of South East London for the next few years and am very envious of you!
Wishing you luck in your new home.

I would say Southwold in Suffolk beats most places. It keeps its own charm despite the tourists. Its not commercialised like most resorts like St Ives and Newquay which just cater to getting as much money out of the visitors as they can. Southwold only has one fish and chip shop and it shuts at 8.00pm !!! leaving just the pubs open in the town. The beach is great and the town is surrounded by countryside and common land that can never be built on thus securing the character of the town.

You are mad to leave Snowdonia..... the Cornish are only interested in how much money they can make out of you, especially if you dont have a local accent, they have no sense of humour and are a total bunch of village idiots.
