just as the question asks. I have no clue what I am talking about here but I want to see your thoughts. Is it possible to somehow manipulate the space around a space ship and somehow "trick" (for lack of a better word) space into thinking the ship had less mass then it truly has? (to move faster)

Well I don't think the creation of a magnetic field would create the effect you are desiring. More than likely the creation of such a field would attract matter of all types so mass would actually increase while having no effect on space. Interesting thought though, tricking space......I wonder if Larry Niven has ever had such a thought. You know quite a bit of hard science fact started out fanciful science fiction. I urge you to disciver more regarding the properties of magnetic fields and their effect on space.

yea I know what your thinking in (spaz! mode) LOL
maybe a inert gas in a big pipe or tube that runs around the ship that has an magnet effect when acted upon by lack of gravity in certain places or intermitting ok oh well that is all of that
the government has engines that can go light speed but still under testing for outside the atmosphere
but who know how many sci fi shows actually came true from the 30's or 40's like computers! we got them today umm ray guns? (yes in lab equipment (Lazers and lazer light shows)
so what is fiction now might be true in the furture

I'm sure it is possible, although maybe not too smart. It may act as a sort of gravity pulling things toward it. I really don't know, just my thoughts.
