do you think it's possible to learn how to dive but not knowing how to swim?

yeah...when you dive, you go deep enough that you touch bottom...just push yourself back up towards the lip of the pool.

however, it's a silly idea and you should learn to swim first. there will be countless situations as a diver that you'll have to swim even if you plan on doing what i mentioned above.

Scuba Diving Without Knowing Swimming

Maybe, as long as you have someone around (like a lifeguard) while you are doing it. Just in case.
On the other hand, you still would have to swim to get back up, or to get out of the pool. I would just have to say to be really careful when you do it. Maybe if you do it then you might learn how to swim in the proses. But just be really careful if you decide to dive.
Also, if you are going somewhere to learn how to dive, they might not let you dive until you learn how to swim. But, I'm not a hundred percent sure about that.

Well If you mean diving like in scuba diving, then I would have to say that your better off learning to swim and your SCUBA expereince will be all th emore greater.

Many instructors and or diving comanies who only want your money and business will tell you that you can learn to dive if your not a good swimmer. According to PADI a person needs to pass a basic swim test in order to complete SCUBA training. My advice is to hope in a pool, like one at the YMCA with a lifeguard and get yourself comfortable in the water and confident. If it means taking a few swim lessons then go for it. You will not be disappointed.

I wasn't the greatest swimmer before I learned to dive and as I increased my swimmining abilitites I gained more pleasure and eventually became a SCUBA instructor.

You have many component you will learn in SCUBA and you will learn tons of safety issue's. Such as how to remove your mask, how to buddy breathe and CESA. Controlled Emergency Swimming Asent. if you can be a good swmmer and are not fearful of the water but rather respect and enjoy it, your diving expereince is gonna be AWESOME!

I have had people in the pool with poor swimming skills and not much water confidence. During the actual dive in the ocean I needed to pull them out of the water while the rest enjoyed their dive.

You can learn to swim with a instructor in about 2 months if you go three times a week. My son is 4 years old and with a floation bubble he can swim the length of a 50 meter pool. Took 2 weeks to get there.

My two oldest boys threw my youngest boy in the water. He was 4 at the time. I was frantic. Then, he popped up out of the water and came to the edge from underneath. He continued to dive and swim like a fish under water never treading on top until he was at least 7. I suppose as long as you can come up safely and get out, you can dive without swimming. Was he swimming? Maybe. I just thought it was just weird, though.

this is very possible, but most likely dangerous because if you dive too deep when you are learning a new dive or even if you just struggle to reach the top of the water because you dont know how to swim would be very dangerous.

It's possible, if you don't really intend on making it back in 1 piece. It's a little like driving when you can't see - a bad idea.

If you can take the time to learn to dive, take a little longer to first learn how to swim. It's not difficult at all, and it's a survival skill that'll come in handy all your life.

don't! it's too dangerous! if something happens you have to get yourself back up to teh survace and to a boat or the shore. when the water get's a bit rough, you will not manage this if you cannot swim. you don't have to be an excelent swimmer, but you need a certain minumum level; to be safe and if you're interested in diving you should know that safety comes befeore EVERTHING else! learn to swim THEN learn scuba diving!

I think you will find out during you pool training if SCUBA is right for you. Don't go to sea if you aren't comfortable diving first in a swimming pool. Never push things relax and pay attention to your SCUBA Instructor. I personally think you should take swim lessons before learing SCUBA because you will find things alot easier once YOU feel more comfortable in the water! I have worked with handicapped divers who have lost the use of their arms&legs and it will take alot of attention to work with them and they should only dive with a DiveMaster or Instructor. If you decide to go ahead with taking a SCUBA course, hire a Dive Master to buddy up with you on your dives until you finally feel comfortable! :) Good Luck!!!
