It was confusing at first, but then I watched it a second time and everything kinda' snapped into place for me.
The original family in the house was the dad, the mother and the boy and his cat. The dad killed the mother out of jealousy because she was in love with another man. He then drowned the boy and his cat, and he then kills himself. If I remember this correctly, it's a Bhuddist belief that when two innocent souls pass over, they become fused together, which is why the ghost of the little boy meows.
Then the couple move in with their mom. The vengeful spirits are obviously upset and take it out on anyone who steps foot in that house, so they then go after the wife, the husband and the husband's sister in that order. The ghosts go after the husband's mother when Sarah Michelle Gellar's character is taking care of her.
So, Sarah Michelle Gellar's character was in the house, so she's the next target, but her boyfriend gets pulled into it and out he goes. Basically, it's a vengeful ghost story.
And personally, I thought the Japanese version was creepier

That was a ridiculous waste of time. I was soooo confused by the end. The only thing that I got out of the movie is Do not go to your attic!!!

i just saw that again today. Odd. I'm not confused by it. Basically, the couple and his mother moved into a home in china...japan...wherever its set. There they believe that when someone died in terror/as a result of rage, their terror is imprinted on the universe. anyone who comes in contact with that place gets imprinted with it as well. The ghosts or whatever they were are just a manifestation of that imprint.
Make sense?
