There are tons of cities called Venice. There was just the one once but then the Americans spoiled it a bit for everyone and named many of their cities "Venice".
Still, Venice is where I come from and it sits in the north east part of Italy, EUROPE. It is a City that was built on water and has NO CARS, No streets in the conventional sense of the word and plenty of bridges, little passageways, round squares, odd shaped squares, ambulances are BOATS there and buses are also boats.
It's built on what was actually a massive SWAMP so as you'd imagine it is now sinking down a fair amout each year. This can be seen by observing the steps that go out at sea, buildings with their bottom parts now under water etc etc, very unusual and also a very romantic place. The boats there have a strange shape and are called "Gondola". They look a bit like bananas as they aren't straight.
They say of venetians: "They S**t in the water".
Once I spent a bit of time on an Airline website checking out the cheapest hotel in the civilised word and strangely enough, it worked out to be in Venice. I say strange because a cappuccino in St Marco's Square could cost you $100 if you come across the wrong barmaid.

Italy, south of Europe. The city stretches across numerous small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy. The saltwater lagoon stretches along the shoreline between the mouths of the Po (south) and the Piave (north) Rivers. The population estimate of 272,000 inhabitants includes the population of the whole Comune of Venezia; the historic city of Venice (Centro storico) inhabitants are around 62,000, while approximately 176,000 people live in Terraferma (literal dry land, it means the extra-lagoon areas) and 31,000 live in other islands of the lagoon.
The Venetian Republic was a major sea power and a staging area for the Crusades, as well as a very important center of commerce (especially the spice trade) and art in the Renaissance.

At the nortmost region of Adriatic Sea!
There are some more cities named Venice, but I assume you mean the original, officially founded about 3,500 years ago!
