Which infant? At what age?

A newborn has instinctive abilities to nurse. For instance, a newborn who wasn't drugged during labor can actually crawl to the breast, attach by her/himself, and start nursing.

An infant who is a year old is probably no longer exclusively nursing. She/he has probably learned to coordinate chewing, swallowing, and breathing. If she/he was given the opportunity, she/he can also feed her/himself, although not necessarily neatly or using silverware. But some babies this age are ready for nothing other than breastfeeding; in this case, they won't have developed the above skills (although they will catch up with their peers within days once they *are* ready for solids).

Around 7 months most infants can do the pincer grasp. That is being able to pick up an object between their index finger and thumb. Before this they can rake objects with their hands. So, they can self-feed (finger foods like cheerios) better when they master the pincer grasp. At the same age they can start holding a bottle and/ or a sippy cup. They won't master being able to fully self feed well after their first birthday.

At birth, a baby roots for the nipple. As they get older, they can grab the breast and pull it towards them. At about 6 or 7 months, everything goes into the mouth. Start solid foods, cereal. The baby will try to grab the spoon, but lacks the skill to feed themselves yet. At about 10 months finger foods can be introduced and they can feed themselves Cheerios or soft veggies. Once they have a few more teeth, you introduce more foods and let them try a spoon now and then, but they really don't get good with it until about 24 months.
