One of your respondents Googled "artika" and got the suggestion "artika sari" but this is wrong: Artika Sari Devi (or Dewi) is an Indonesian beauty contestant recently in the news. Another respondent noted that it was a type of dog, but this too is mistaken: "Artika" is the name of a company in the U.S. famous for breeding Siberian huskies -- so it is NOT the name of a type of dog itself -- just of the kennel! (I imagine THAT reference came from Google as well!)
As a personal name "ARTIKA" crops up as a name in various languages, but its main claim to fame is in the Basque language: it is originally from a word meaning "she-bear", and is related to Arcturus (the constellation), arctic (literally "polar bear") and the English name "Arthur". Your own suggestion that it may mean "elder sister" may be correct to some extent, as animals are often associated with family in old names -- a holdover from the primitive idea of "totem" -- that each person has an animal "spirit-guide". Hope this helps.
