I am from Pakistan.in various countries reasons of the crime rate are different and reasons for its increase and decrease are also different
For instance, last year on October 8,2005 Pakistan had a terrible earthquake ,we never had such a disaster before and our people were not prepared for it ,but this earthquake bonded everyone so much ,for the first time i felt something that deep.
Everyone was together in this phase ,and every eye had hope , we were divided into two halves, one half suffering and other half helping
In that whole week and month , everyone was so shocked and scared , there was reported decrease in crime for the whole week , no robbery , no theft , nothing all over Pakistan.
so the reason here maybe the suffering and feelings of sympathy for humanity ... if we feel for life , for humanity , then we would never opt for crime !
Regards,
Sidra

Decrease in crime? Where did you hear that? I haven't heard anything, but increases. New Orleans might have a decrease since only 1/3 of the people are back living there. However, they had one of the worst crime weekends a few weeks ago with 6 people being killed.
Not that I'm saying our soldiers are criminals, but some are, especially murdering their wives. We have a lot of people in Iraq, is that what you are referring to?

One theory is that gang violence typically increases and decreases in a cyclical pattern that usually has nothing to do with the police and sentencing programs that are in place; and that we are in the decreasing part of that cycle.

the increase in the length of imprisonment terms and the huge increase in the prison population means that so many people are already imprisoned who would otherwise be commiting crimes.

the US prez doesn't have to face charges re: domestic wiretapping and what not. it starts from the top. if they're willing to give slack to bush, then of course, they'll cut deals and cover up for the rest of the govt folks.

We are all getting older and can not run as fast, and the cops don't want to run as fast either, so we don't do crime and they don't catch us
