If the members of our military can put their lives on the line, the least I can do is not add to their danger by contributing to the resources that puts them in danger.
I will never contribute, knowingly, to anything that will put our Armed Forces in any type of danger.
And, to pay a few extra dollars for a legitimate diamond or even offer another type of stone to someone would be very little sacrifice on any American's part.

What makes you think that other stones aren't mined the same way? What about metals? How do you know they aren't mined under the same conditions?
And there's no guarantee that even if you buy from a jeweler the supports the Kimberly process that you won't be getting blood diamonds. Anyone can state anything, and you are none the wiser.

wouldn't other diamonds be mined the same way? Maybe these diamond mines are the only thing that are keeping these small countries running>? I would find out more. Probably get a stone that looks like a diamond. Or just something simple.

Technically all diamonds are blood diamonds. Diamonds are the currency of terrorists, despots, and all ruthless dictators. Why? because every country wants them and every country is willing to sell them for large quantities and every country is willing to buy them for large amounts of money and every country is willing to ignore where they came from. It doesn't matter where they come from. as long as The Diamond has value in the global economy, every diamond is a blood diamond.
I however don't care about that and just want pretty looking things. If a Ruby or a saphire looks better on the setting I picked... then yes. If a diamond looked the best then it's a diamond.
As for a clear moral conscious. If you don't buy it, someone else will. there is no lack of people that want diamonds. You want to stop injustice and what not... don't attack the currency... attack the cause. Even if diamond became worthless, another form of currency would come around.
You can't stop The slaughter through the diamond exchange.

if i was in a bad financial situation, i would; but then when i could afford a honest diamond i would buy that and then auction off the blood diamond and donate the proceedes to a charity who helps to end blood diamonds

men are less likely to wear their wedding band if it has a rock. keep it simple so he doesn't have an excuse not to wear it. example .. because of work.
