I don't see why you would have to have short nails. You could use your fingernails as a pick!

It's easier to get a cleaner sound with short nails (on the fret, usually left, hand) because you can press the string more firmly against the fretboard and with the tip of the finger rather than the side. But why listen to us -- find out for yourself by playing with long nails and then cutting them. Which works better for you?

Longer nails on the strum/pick hand give a different sound -- experiment with that too and find a length that works well for you.

Dear if you are right hand guitarist cut your left hand's nail! It will help you lot!

And if you want to be finger guitarist don't want to use pick, then keep your nails on left hand! You can use five fingers beside one pick!

Sound generate from nail better than pick, nice sweet resonance sound!

it would be easiest to have short nails on the fret hand but on the picking hand you can have the nails as long as you want but it would probably look wierd if thats what your worried about

playing electric guitar with long finger nails would cause a somewhat fuzzy sound that sound engineers will kill you...also you would damage the freetbroad with long sharp nails...
