How does FIFA compile these statistics: http://www.fifa.com/en/mens/statistics/index/0,2548,All-May-2006,00.html ?

Six out of their top 10 have already been knocked out; some didn't even make it out of the group round. So, what I'm getting from it is that statistics really don't mean a thing...

You're partially right. Stats sometimes really don't mean anything in a tournament like the World Cup. But these kind of stats are the short term stats that gauges the teams' performance for only within a year or two. Long term stats tend to be more reliable like the experience and exposure, and the pedigree. Just look at the upcoming semifinals. Even if the other matches aren't over yet, one things for sure, the semi-finals will be played by the so-called "giants" and these result relied on the long term stats acquired through the years since the inception of the World Cup (and to a certain extent, the sport itself).

But wouldn't that be a nice thing that the sport doesn't rely heavily on stats? That's the true beauty of football! Anything can happen. There's an element of surprise which is a reflection of reality. It gives "minnows" hope and "superpowers" of the sport a thought of caution. Such element make it more abstract and unpredictable which is beautiful. It makes the sport more meaningful to watch and play. Also there's an element to it as if the fates have something to do with the outcome which is out of the hands of the players themselves- the element of the "extraordinary" like a sort of divine intervention. In this sport you have a control of your team's destiny but that control is not 100% complete. The circumstances surrounding you should also go with your way (e.g. referees- they are error prone however "top-level" they might be.

Such characteristics of this sport makes it truly unique and lovable.

...Again, It doesn't solely rely on stats and you are partly right!

Agree, I don't understand how FIFA came up with the ranking.
It just doesn't seem right to me.
But in regards to results of games, yeah it's unpredictable.
This is sport, the ball is round, anything can happen.
But Germany will win!!!!!
