Well I'm a step mom. I don't know how miserable you feel or why you feel that way right now, but I can tell you being a step-mom isn't easy. You're not "really" mom, but you ARE dad's wife, and you ARE an adult, and you ARE in charge of your house and you DO have to make your own rules. You shouldn't try to be their mom, but try to be their friend.
I can also tell you that "this, too, shall pass".....it finally did with me. Both of my step-kids are grown with families of their own, and we're all still close.

I'm probably way off but I would venture to say its not the kids: its Dad making you feel miserable . Think about it!
