My little bro is starting to go to shows and things and i want to at least know what hes talking about. I am confused about whether wmo is more punk or goth or just the sad boy who is borderline gay that gets beaten after lunch everyday in high school gyms across america.

EMO-A bunch of White kids from the suburbs that think that life is so dark and painful when the fact is they have no real problems. The music will make you want to kill yourself though.

Kristina has the best answer. But I will answer the question about Bright Eyes. No, Bright Eyes is not emo. Bright Eyes is considered "indie". And Emo isn't like goth rock. Goth is less whiny and more depressing. Now, I will name off a few emo bands to give you a clearer picture: All-American Rejects, Hot Water Music, Tiger Army, AFI, Simple Plan, Alkaline Trio, My Chemical Romance, Funeral Diner, The Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World, Matchbox Romance, Sunny Day Real Estate, Taking Back Sunday, and Thursday. Keep in mind, though, I'm no expert on Emo. So some of those bands I mentioned could be considered "pop-punk" or "indie".

What is EMO

" The word has survived and flourished in three decades, two millenniums, and two Bush administrations. It's older than four baseball teams, six basketball teams, four football teams, and two soccer leagues. It's older than five former Yugoslav republics, the last seven national spelling champions, and Avril Lavigne. It's older than most of its fans.

It's been a source of pride, a target of derision, a mark of confusion, and a sign of the times.

It's been the next big thing twice, the current big thing once, and so totally over millions of times.

And yet, not only can no one agree on what it means, there is not now, nor has there ever been, a single major band that admits to being emo. Not one.

That's pretty impressive. And contentious. And ridiculous. Good thing too--because so is emo.

Emo is short for emotional. But isn't all music emotional? Well, yes, or at least it should be. Originally, emo was short for "emocore," a strain of hardcore punk that was notable for its obsession with feelings (as opposed to politics, anger, and smashing stuff up). Then it started to be applied to bands that weren't punk, to fashion trends, to sad-eyed kids in the back of class. It's always been mildly derisive, a term used by haters and critics to dismiss something that's overly weepy, self-indulgent, or unironic. Every generation that loves emo bands simultaneously rejects the term while claiming owership of it--meaning even if they won't admit they love emo, they certainly will say how much they hate everything that's been called emo since them. But still, no one knows what it is."

emo=emotional
just another sterotype to attatch to
people who are the total opposite
bands=as far as i no it would be
my chemical romance, bleed the dream,
armor for sleep, mainly just the recent
bands....their music is very whiny but at the
same time very depressing....
i have been listening to bright eyes for
2 years and he is definiely NOT emo
hes along the lines of indie
(with very confusing but compelling lyrics i mite
add)
but i luv brite eyes just the same....

adding to that: iwas accused of being emo
and its kind of offending to be called emo....
but still its just another label kids use to bring
some one down when they feel lik **** themselves(btw nikole....u answer my questions i'll answer urs....we'll help each other out :)

Emo - short for "emotional." Emo is a broad title that covers a lot of different styles of emotionally-charged punk rock.
