Because at first, Rhode Island WANTED to be a island but the other islands bullied him so he said screw it.

It's said to have received its name from a small island in Narragansett Bay named Roode Eylandt, "red island"

For the same reason they call Rio de Janeiro (river of january) at a bay which is not a river.
