Being pregnant, it is not safe to take any medication without the approval of your ob. If ths is becoming a constant problem, please call your doctor tomorrow. For tonight, try some warm milk, ask your husband to give you a soothing backrub (amazing how relaxed that will make you feel!), lie down and daydream about something pleasant, or even read for a while.

Ask your doctor about medicine. I wouldn't take anything with out a doctor's approval.
In the meantime, try a warm (not hot because you are pregnant) bath, Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Herb Tea, soothing music. Also vanilla and lavendar are both supposed to be great for relaxing you can put one of those plug in air freshners in your room for aroma-therapy. Tensing then relaxing your muscles while you breath deeply also helps get you relaxed.
If this is your first baby I think the complete inability to sleep for the last few weeks is preparation for the big event which is completely unfair because it would be so much nicer if you could just sleep. Almost every woman goes through sleep problems during the last few weeks or pregnancy.
Best of luck.

Can you not sleep b/c you're not tired or b/c you can't get comfortable?
If it's b/c you're not comfortable, try placing a Boppy or body pillow countoured around your belly so you can lie comfortably on your side (left is the best side to lie on). Try various pillow positions for maximum comfort.
If it's b/c you've got SO much swimming through your mind (who wouldn't with a little pumpkin coming to live w/you in five short weeks-or less!), then you should try to wind down about an hour before actually getting in bed. Have some hot chocolate (I know it's summer and that sounds a little odd, but, you never know) or some low-or decaf. tea (chamomile is calming but I don't like the taste, personally). You can try soaking in a warm tub-this also relieves pressure on your back as your belly is buoyed by the water-it's ok to lie on your back in a tub, not in bed for long periods.
You might also try reading-something light or even a little boring so you don't get your mind churning again. I wouldn't read anything baby-related since this might just get you thinking of things you need to do too.
Don't watch TV or play on the computer for about an hour before bed as these can arouse your brain as well. Also, if the dr has ok'd it, try wearing yourself out with some love-making. Take a walk after dinner. Fresh air and low-level UV rays should help exhaust you too.
God bless you and hang in there!
It's almost over and you can sleep when the baby sleeps, when he/she gets here! And, trust me, that will be a LOT!

I asked my Dr about this the other day, she said that Tylenol pm, in moderation is okay. I am at 32 weeks, and having a heck of a time sleeping also. I bought a body pillow, and I found that laying on my side, and putting one leg up over that thing helps me out alot as far as getting comfortable. It's all good, until it is time for that 3 am pee....

Do NOT take any medications when you are pregnant without your Doctor's advice. The only exceptions are Tylenol (Acetaminophen) and Metamucil. If you are constipated you can take Metamucil during your pregnancy-it's the only laxative/stool softener that is safe for pregnant women as it's all natural and gentle. Try and drink some warm milk or camomile tea. PS if you use Metamucil please make sure to use the correct amount of water or more. It's dangerous to use less.

Sleep on your left side. This allows for the best blood flow to the fetus and to your uterus and kidneys. Try to avoid lying on your back. Try using a special "pregnancy" pillow to help you sleep better. If you can't sleep, don't lie in bed forcing yourself to sleep. Get up and read a book, write in a journal or take a warm bath.

I am not sure if you can take meds without harming the baby. However, it has been proven that warm milk helps make people sleepy (so can turkey). Try drinking a warm glass of milk before you go to bed. Just make sure that it is warm, and not hot. Also, try not to drink caffeinated beverages. Good luck :-)
