Get your head out of the t.v. news, especially all day news networks. We are far more civilized than our ancestors. The problem with people's misperception that the world is a cruel, violent, ugly place is that too few read history. Go onto some old newspaper websites and read some of the old news stories. You'd get a more realistic idea of how things really used to be. They had murderers, rapists, robbers, etc., galore back then. The difference is that the news back then was read one minute, then wrapping a fish the next. (Out of sight, out of mind!)
Focus on the good things in life. Instead of letting world politics get you down, instead of letting the occassional bizarre murder case get you down, ask yourself if all of that is on your doorstep. Then look at all the things in your own life that you appreciate so much. Keep doing that and you'll soon see all the things that are a blessing to you. Life isn't perfect, but it isn't all bad by a long shot. To a huge degree our lives are what we make of them. I refuse to make my outlook based on the wierd and depressing stuff harped on ad infinitum by the media ("gotta have a story to make money off of") exploiters. Journalists are ambulance chasers. They'll pass up a thousand life-is-so-beautiful stories to report and (often) distort one odd or violent event. When you see such a thing harped on incessantly on t.v., radio, and newspapers, just ask youself why. People are just trying to make money off someone else's misfortune. Go outside and listen to the birds singing and see the butterflies fluttering by, observe the beautiful blue sky and the billowy drifting clouds, enjoy time spent with the people you love. Just get away from that old squawk box; heck, just turn it off and go for a walk. (As the Polynesian girl told Mr. Christian in Mutiny on the Bounty, "You eat life, or life eat you!")

The answer depends on you. If you believe in god (as I do) it is because of freewill. God gave us all freewill to believe and make decisions about our own lives. So of course evil beings are present and cast influences over us.
If you do not believe in god and more earthly then it could be because there are predjudices and sterotypes that occur in society that breed hatred and therefore causes fear. And as all of us know that to fear the unknown is inevitable. When you do not know what is there then you are scared. If you do not know how somethings work then you are scared to mess with it.
I truly believe that tolerance is the key to many of the worlds problems. If more people (all kinds) could learn to be more tolerant of others and are given the chance to experience new things and situations then maybe then will we all gain a better advantage on this thing we call Earth.

it is definitly not ugly. when you wake up in the morning, you here the morning birds chirping. you walk downstairs, and outside the window and the sun is shining up, and the grass has dew in it. at the end of he day, outside the window is a beautiful sunset that is glistening, and it melts away slowly. the stars twinkle up at you, and you see a shooting start pass, make a wish, and you fall into a long sleep.
now common, how is this world not beautiful? look on the bright side, seriously.

“People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.” - emerson
That's how you decide to look at it.
There are good things happening too. Remember the media is a business.
It's not the majority of people who are the problem, just a few scambled brains.

That's your perspective.
I've seen a great big part of the world. It's beautiful with striking differences across it's surface. No telling what's inside.
As for it's inhabitants?
Sadam Hussein killed 300,000
Hitler killed 7 million
Stalin killed 30 to 100 million
Osama killed 3000
Who do people hate most?
Better yet, who do people hate least?

My girl, everything is about sowing and harvest. If you give you will take. Most of all the people around the world take, but in the beginning wasn't on that way, first you have to give, then just to pick up your fruit.Know that it is confuse, but i think you will understand it

Because people fail to change their perspective and see the beauty and power in simple things like a wandering dandelion seed.
