ah the original virago,I have a 1981.the problem is simple. your intake manifold has developed a leak.remove both carbs, they come out as a unit.check the rubber manifold for cracks.replace it if need be,put it all back together nice and TIGHT. it will fire right up.By the way the rear cylinder is number one.The easy way to tell if I am right is to turn the fuel valve to the prime position.this lets fuel flow without vacume pulling it .if it starts up this way you know that you have lost the vacume you need to get the fuel into the motor.common problem with this bike by the way

Make sure the dead cylinder has good compression. Swap the sparkplugs to see if that is the problem.
If the Virago has 2 carburettors (I think they do) make sure the rubber boot between the carb and manifold is clamped properly and not damaged.

been there, i know the answer. You don't put your bike up right(on double stand) but on the single stand, so the oil runs from the engine in the spark, the spark fills with oil and and won't fire. chek the spark and notice if there is any oil. clean it, put it back and use the double stand only. i am giving up mine.should i buy a KTM LC4 640 or Yamaha xt 660?

Check the carb is actually in the rear manifold. Its a common problem that they backfire when starting and blow carbs off cylinder head
