histones are a kind of protein. their main function is to link the DNA molecule. the length of a DNA molecule( totally stretched) is more than 2 meters. the histones are sherical in shape & are found inside the nucleus of the cell closely attached to the DNA molecule.the DNA molecule wraps around thousands of these histone proteins hence enclosing the long DNA molecule inside the nucleus. these proteins also provide strenght to the molecule.

A histone is a generic DNA binding protein that double stranded DNA will wind around to form more compact structures. The positive residues on the protein interact with negative charges on the phosphate backbone of the DNA coil, allowing it to 'stick' to the protein. Histones (of which there are several different histone proteins) will form complexes with each other, each holding on to DNA and keeping it sequestered and condensed. Histones can be removed through modification of the protein (histone acetylases for one). In this manner, histones will regulate the binding of other proteins to DNA, either for transcription or synthesis. The Histone and DNA complex is called chromatin, and makes up the entire chromosome when it compact.
