I believe that people fear and distrust that which they do not know or understand. I believe that it is really the unknown that is not liked. Gypsies of the past were (from what I understand and no I am not an expert- just my opinion) known to be dishonest and criminals. I do not know if that is because people did not agree with their beliefs or if the above was in fact true but in this day and age the reputation of a group of people is written in stone and for some reason once that is written it is extremely hard to change the face of the group. I hope this is what you meant.

At least here in Mexico because they are pickpockets... Ive known of two gipsy families that have rented a house and taken everything in it, even the light bulbs!

There is just a negative asociation with their way of life in many parts of Europe--thieves, drunks, witchcraft, etc that has come from generations of bad eggs, similar to how many people think all American are monolingual idiot republicans.

and a question for you...is it really THAT hard to spell "are" and "you"?
