In Response to the 1st two answers....This is a very serious question. I really want to know why people are ok with their own gross body scents, but not others? If you do not realize this is true, you're in denial and you should seek professional help.

Yes it is very true ! Too bad that most of your answers came from women. Women I don't think appreciate a really stinky fart. And since you put it under the psychology section makes it even better because I have had this conversation with my friends before and it's totally true . It is a psychology question. I don't think I've ever known anyone to clear the room after their own fart. I think almost everyone appreciates their own gas. To me the worse it smells the more I enjoy it and hate it when it fades away. But it's totally disgusting to smell a hint of someone else's gas. And yes they're all in denial , you just got the wrong crowd.

I don't feel its proper for someone to get on here and ask an open question to the general public expecting any type of honest answers for the question, then the asker injecting their own views as a response to the views from people who answer!!!
This is not a debate, you asked. Simply accept the answers as given and don't argue about it or inject your views towards us! Its fine if you disagree.... But its not fine to make replies stating your disagreement.
When the time comes for you to pick the best answer and that person gets 10 points because of it.... Are you going to pick an answer which you agree with the most??? or the BEST/RIGHT answer????
I WAS going to give you some answers for your questions, but after reading what you added later it really annoyed me that you did that! I have a few answers which would explain things somewhat.... But you don't deserve them. Stay in the dark and enjoy your gasses!

There's an old saying - "It's a wise fox that can smell his own scent". Personally I've found as my dear companion and I have grown old together our farts have grown to smell very similar. If I didn't know better I would sometimes think one of us had brought a horse into bed - but that's OK. I always liked horses. Maybe it's the healthy diet.

I will tell you that when I pass gas...on occasion I have cleared the room...it stinks...do I find a room filled with scents of roses and what not...no, you better believe that I am following suit...
You have got an issue.
Maybe....maybe what you are thinking was damn that came out of my ***...no way...Saddam has got nothing on this...and hence admiring the stink you have gave birth too...but you know damn well it aint a rose your smellin.

I think that the gas you are referring to is methane gas and perhaps is an innate response to self preservation to dislike others'. As opposed to aromatherapy which can enhance health.
I think it possibly may not be offensive to our own selves because it is the leftover of unused nutrients from foods we have recently consumed.
We are also not offended by our own voice, our own ability to sing etc and therefore not being offended of ourselves amounts to a form of self acceptance.
And it just may be that when our mommys and daddys changed our diapers they said "ooooh, tinky baby, tinky baby" and kissed the bottoms of our feet. Like Pavlov's dog, we may have become conditioned that it was a pleasurable smell. Which would make sense too that as our parents pointed out that for us as babies that it is a smell to be considered as bad also. But our own was pleasing to our parents. (What did we know?) Thats for your psych class.

I for one do not enjoy the smell of passed gas by anyone. But if you like your own smell, than more power to ya.

To answer your question..'a fox smells it's own smell first' & we all know foxes & dogs consider dead meat to be their fanciest after-shave lotion, which is why they roll ecstatically through a decomposing critter!
Most of the time I think "yeah, that was a safe one, just inconspicuous gas" Sometimes I find "hmmm, interesting, but not obnoxious. " Very occasionally I smell "OH MY GOD! There's a dead rat up my butt!"
To avoid the 'dead rats' I no longer eat pizza, McDonald's, or KFC. Beer's mostly off my list, but it can't be eliminated completely.

People tend to accept that which is familar to them and it is known that when two people are attracted to one another one of the contributing factors is their personal scent..(ie.. Hair) if the scent more closely matches the partner then the attraction is a go.

I know what you are talking about. We live with ourselves all day long, from birth, so maybe its that we are used to our own smells. Our body odors don't bother us as it does others. My mother used to say "A skunk never smells himself" Its sort of like that I guess.
