The Damned. They were not as political as The Clash or as high-profile as The Sex Pistols, but no other punk band had as much longevity or high quality of songs over their careers (1977-1988). "The Light At The End Of The Tunnel" is one of the greatest compilations of any band's career.

The Cramps. They are the King and Queen of Psychobilly. Poison Ivy is an incredible guitarist and gets NO credit for her ability or style, and Lux Interior...well, he made being deranged fashionable.

OMD, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. They had a lot of hit singles, but everyone saw them at lightweight pop. The depth of their melodies was as creative as Chicago, which was damned hard to do with only one singer and synthesizers while Chicago had three lead singers and four different wind instruments.

I'm sure there are others, but these are the first that come to mind.

I could also mention several great Canadian groups (The Northern Pikes, The Payola$, Red Rider, Rough Trade) who never hit big south of the border because of the US attitude toward "Canadian content" (Cancon). It became law in 1973 that 1/3 of all music on Canadian radio had to be Canadian.

For the first decade, it meant mediocre bands got airplay they didn't deserve, but it forced Canadian record companies to develop and promote Canadian talent. Without it, there would be no Barenaked Ladies, no Avril Lavigne, no Nickelback, no Sum 41, and no Rob Thomas. (Bryan Adams and Celine Dion are the counterarguments.)

Sweet deserved more credit for their efforts. Also Trooper, U.F.O. and Michael Shenker Group should've gotten more record label / radio airplay support, too.
