But news agencies are not keepers of the faith, and are not bound by law to be good and fair and true. They are private enterprises, out to make a buck like everyone else, by giving the public what they want. And if what we want is blood and guts, spectacular tragedies, wild rumors, threats and disasters, aren't we to blame for feeding off their every offering? Or should they be held accountable for more responsible reporting?

They should definitely take the time to do the proper research necessary to make a true factual account of what they are presenting as news. But they seem to place too much emphasis on competition from other sources for information to be the one to "break" the news with their "scoops" .. and this leads to sloppiness and rushing to get a story out in the shortest possible amount of time.. and this leads to so much misinformation.. it is our responsibility to be knowledgable about what we are interested enough in to make a educated guess at seperating the fact from fiction as presented in the news.. but yes.. they should take full responsibility for their inaccuracy..
Remember the Tom Brokaw scandal? There's a good example of what can happen.. and rightfully should.

Some need to get off their high-horse, ditch the holier than thou attitude and show some responsibility. There is no way to hold them responsible other than for readers/viewers to abandon them. Don't let the one from the Big Apple, be the one apple in the barrel that spoils the whole bunch. (Even if more followed their lead).

Honestly, I wish they were.

But I don't see that happening. It is a business, just like everything else.
