the internet was originally created to allow universities to share data. now it is a public venue for sharing files, data, information, etc... files viewed on the internet, or web sites, are typically HTML files (hypertext markup language). when you view a web site, you are basically sending a request to someone elses computer to access a file. the computer that stores that file is called a 'web server'. the server then sends the file to your computer (also called a client). the file is then viewed by a program (web browser - ie.. internet explorer, netscape, firefox, opera) that converts the html file to a viewable file that contains text, images, animations, etc.

as opposed to intranet?

The internet is like the old "party line" where the connections all went to a central point. Everyone could talk to anyone, etc.

The internet is a network of computers all connected through larger computers called servers. The servers are connected to each other, through other servers, etc, and they all make one huge web-like network. Thus the name "world wide web"
