I've used Ad-AwareSE Personal spyware program and can personally recommend it. I ran another spy checker that I'd purchased at the same time and found I that Ad-Aware found more bad actors and the most critical spy elements over the other.
I now operate SpyCatcher, and although there was a small cost, I like it very well because it operates totally automatically, and reports what it finds, if anything, after it runs. I don't have to give it a lot of thought.
A good source to look for freeware or shareware downloads in spyware or other security programs is at PC Magazine's download pages: http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/. Here you can find reviews and links to download the programs.

I am assuming you are using a legal version of XP.
I recommend Windows Defender. It is an excellent AS program and was designed to be part of the protection package provided in Windows Vista OS. It is also the AS program used in the Windows Live One Care package. WD is free. It runs full time. You can download it here.

This next program I'm recommending sounds too good to be true. This time it is true. It's called Cyberhawk. I learned about it about 6 months ago. It was in early Beta testing. I have been using it ever since. 2 days ago they released the finale release version and I was in for a big shock. When the beta versions would detect and stop an infection attempt, a window would appear and notify me. In the six months it has notified me 20 times. I thought that was super. In the full release version they included a counter to tell you the attempted infections that Cyberhawk has stopped. It told me it had stopped 187 infection attempts. In two day it has stopped 4 more infection attempts and is now at 191.
This program is designed to be used with your AV and AS programs. It should not be used as a standalone protection package. No setup is required, just download and let it run.

Try adware they have a good supported spyware removal program. Check their website for more information. I just bought myself spyware doctor by PC tools which is one of the few that actually checks for keyboard loggers. I hope this helps a little. Good Luck.

I have prepared this to aid you. Topics covered are: Anti virus, Anti spy ware, Browsers, e-mail, Word processors, Database, Spreadsheets, Presentations, Drawings and Photo manipulations. All programmes described are free to use, some even for commercial use.
Antiviral.
AVG free. Excellent protection available from: http://www.Grisoft.com
Don't use two antiviral products together as they may be incompatible. If your Antiviral trial has run out, then remove product from your computer and get the AVG installed.
Anti-spyware
Essential products are: Adaware SE from: http://www.lavasoft.com
Spybot SD http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html
Spywareblaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Windows Defender - from Microsoft downloads.
Office Applications
Open Office has an extremely good free to use and distribute product at http://www.openoffice.org
It contains programmes fully functional in Word-processing, Database, Spreadsheets, Drawing and Presentation. It looks and feels like Microsoft Office and can even make PDF's
Photo-manipulations
For ease of use and management of your photo files try Kodak easyshare software http://www.kodak.com
or Picasso. http://.picasa.google.com/
For advanced and fully functional photographic manipulation gimp2 is very similar to Photoshop and is available from http://gimp.org
Browsers and E-mail programmes.
Can recommend Firefox for browsing and has many safety features installed and is self updating and for a general e-mail programme, Thunderbird is very good. Go to:
http://www.mozilla.com/products/
Fun and helpful programmes
Have a look at Calendar Magic, http://www.stokepoges.plus.com/calendar.htm
it has lots of Scientific, Geometry, Factor and Expression calculators as well as Global distances, Sun and Moon Data, a Pregnancy Calculator, Time Data and Alarm clocks as well as an extremely comprehensive range of Calendars in about 27 different formats from Afghanistan to Vietnamese, including Chinese and Hindu.
C Cleaner.http://www.ccleaner.com/
This will tell you a lot about what is on your computer, such as running programmes, cookies, History, settings etc. and will help you clean up and remove unwanted items. Be careful how you use it as it is a very powerful programme and you should read the help index before you do anything with it.
Hope this information is of help to you and others.
