I know many people who will hear of a new discovery, whether it be a product or a scientific concept and they are ready to bash it.

Then sometime later they start talking about it and they are embracing it. Then I say to them, "But you thought it sounded stupid before when you heard it, why do you think it makes sense now?" Then they are all like, "What are you talking about? I never heard of it before."

Are they in denial because they do not want to seem like that are contradicting themselves?

Yeah I agree, they have to wait for things to become popular before they will embrace it, they are scared of having there own opinion on things and sticking to it.

There is this psychological term called "cognitive dissidence" which describes that people act in a way that aligns with their belief so that they basically feel more comfortable in their skin. To not act and believe in the same way is uncomfortable. Maybe the selective memories that you speak of is an extension of their brain trying to make them more comfortable. Or maybe they are just trying to save face.

they just dont want it to be known that they made a snap judgement which was wrong about the product in the first place, so instead they deny it and have a hard time admitting that they were wrong, they dont want to be looked at as wierd for the judgement they made in the first place especially if the new product/concept has gotten popular...
