my two wk old son has milk build up on his tongue.i'm assuming it's from the formula that i give him at nights every now and then. i have no idea how to get it off, he won't open his mouth. and how can i tell if it's thrush or just milk build up?

You don't have to get rid of it. It's normal.

A milk stain is solid. Thrush is *raised* white bumps. If he has thrush, you will see raised bumps even on top of the milk stain, or on his gums or on the inside of his cheeks.

You should of course ask your doctor but there are ways to tell between the two. Milk build up is on the tongue, makes it look white right in the middle. Thrush is on the tongue, gums and cheeks and it ofter itches. If your son is crying for no reason, it may be thrush. You can use a wet toothbrush (very small baby one) and gently brush the babies tongue, if it is milk build up then it should come off easily. You might have to have someone help you gently open his mouth, don't worry, he might get mad but it wont hurt him! If the milk does not come off then call your doctor and get some medication for the thrush, good luck!!

Sounds like Thursh. Thrush is a yeast infection in the mouth. Its nothing you did wrong, just from him taking a pacifier, bottle, or nipple changed the pH balance in his mouth. If it dosent wipe off or go away after he drinks a bottle of water, it is probably thrush. It will get worse and worse until you go to the dr. for meds. Eventually, without meds, it looks like he has a cotton ball in his mouth. The medication is drops that you put on each side of his mouth (by the cheek). After giving the meds to him for a few day you will notice a significant improvement.

If it's thrush, you'll start to see white on the inside of his lips too, but you really don't want to wait that long to find out. Thrush is not a fun thing to have. Thrush is yeast, and as well all know, yeast is not pleasant.

My friends baby had that on her tounge. Try taking a wash clothe and gently rubbing it on her tounge at every bathtime. If it starts spreading to the sides of his mouth than its probally thrush. He should than be taken to the doctor. I am the kind of mom that will rush my daughter to the doctor as soon as I see something or think that something is not right.

This is thrush, which is basically a yeast infection. The protein in yogurt will get rid of it, but it's not healthy for babies under 6 months old. You are going to have to get a prescription.

Call the pediatrician when they are open, sounds like thrush to me. Never even heard of 'milk build up'.

As long as you can easily wipe it off (with a wet washcloth for example) it is probably not thrush. If your baby seems to be in pain or if you're really concerned consult your doctor.

sounds like thrush.....if it doesn't fade away between feedings, it's thrush....it should only be white for about 45min after each feeding....if at all..........go to the dr.
