Real estate career requirements.
I'm interested in the real estate field. I've heard that you don't have to go to college long for it,and I heard it's a full four years. Either way I'm gonna go to further my education, but I'd like to know the longest you have to go and what do you need. Can I still go to college or start type of program while finishing highschool?

I don't know exactly what I wanna go into. Say maybe a broker. I'm not sure. I just think I'll enjoy selling homes. Also being a broker.

Hi,

Every state will have different education and test requirements. You will need to look online for each state's Dept. of Real Estate. That will tell you what you will need to do.

I used the Anthony Schools online real estate education courses. You can check to see if they have one in your state. Otherwise, some real estate agancies will allow you to take classes through their firm and then reimburse your fees after your first transaction. You will need to call around to find out.

Most states will have education requirements to include along with your state exam. However, you may be able to use some of your college courses as substitutes (ie. I had a business degree and was able to transfer some). Check with them.

Yes, you can do real estate part time, depending on the firm.

Where I am, in Illinois, you just go to a private school, or community college, or the Board Office of your local real estate board and take a class. Then you have to pass a state test. Any agency will hire you probably, except RE/MAX, which usually hires experienced agents. So shop around and meet with various brokers. Pay is commission only, and there are fees you have to pay, such as board fees (for the MLS, lockbox, and also for franchise fees if you work for a franchised company like Century 21, etc.)

Good luck! It's a fun career, but I don't do it anymore because it took every weeknight and weekend (especially Sundays) away from my kids and family. The money is good though, but only after you've put in two years or so. It can also be a cut-throat business, so become thick-skinned to deal with that.

You can get a degreed background in real estate but to become a broker you just need to take a certain number of hours of classroom teaching and then take the test for your license.

"Real estate career" is not a very descriptive label. Maintenance work is a real estate career too. Please be more specific. Do you want to be a real estate broker? A property manager? A real estate portfolio manager?
