Friction from driving on the highways causes the tread/rubber to wear away over time. Hopefully you replace the worn out tires before they wear completely away. When your tread becomes shallow or bald GET NEW TIRES!!!! Tires are now being recycled for asphalt and running tracks, turned into rubber mats (doormats, mats for horse stalls, rubber mats in restaurants) flooring, retreading tires, etc, etc. If you ever happen to walk barefoot across the street and your tootsies are black, combination of tar (from the asphalt) and rubber.
Have you ever gotten a new basketball and it has all those little bumps on it. The more you played H-O-R-S-E or one on one with someone or just shooting in the drive way.....Over time those little bumps disappear. The friction from hands passing and dribbling it on the pavement has caused those bumps to wear away. Eventually leaving it smooth.

Here in Phoenix they shred old tires and mix them with asphalt to pave the highways. It's called rubberized asphalt. When driving on it, it is a lot quieter than regular asphalt.
