The descriptions on websites tend to be confusing because while his novels are not hard to read...they're hard to briefly explain. There are a few concepts that the reader grasps after the first chapter or so, and then everything else makes sense. But to try to sum it up in 100 words or less...like an Amazon review for example...is very hard to do.

The books are great. I've only read Uglies and Pretties. I haven't gotten a chance to read the third one, Specials, yet.

The books chiefly deal with a dystopic society--a utopia gone wrong--whose focus is on external beauty at the sacrifice of individuality. There is a surgery that everyone receives when they turn sixteen that changes them from their own genetic self...into this society's "vision" of the perfect boy or perfect girl.

To say anything more than that...is to start throwing in spoilers. But the main character has some big decisions to make throughout the book regarding how she feels about herself and how she feels about society.

I do recommend the novels. They're very fast-paced (in my opinion).

So it's your typical teen novel with issues such as self-esteem, friendship, and questioning society's values but with a futuristic twist.
