You need to look in your heart and say to yourself "If I were in a life-or-death situation would he/she be there for me?" Or you could ask them yourself and say "Are you really there for me?"
You can tell from a person's actions, though and the stuff they tell you what kind of a friend they are to you.

All my friends are the people I chosen to have in my life. They are the people I am always going to be there for and who will always be there for me. What really makes it cool is we all know that we don't have to talk everyday, we just know that we are there for each other, support each other, opinions mean the world to each other. Good friendship is about understanding, trust, being non judgmental at the right moments, and then kicking them in the a** when they need it. It isn't all about common interests its about common souls and I truly I think that all my friends are my soul mates! That is what true friends are all about to me.
