Actually, this is an interesting question. Classification of colors is usually determined by the culture (not all cultures have equivalent terms for colors, so what you consider black, green and blue might be considered the 'same' color elsewhere, or you may find that blue is split into different shades of blue with different words used for each) and also according to the purpose for the classification. Mankind has always made efforts to classify things - to indicate which objects/concepts have similarities and in what ways they are different from each other. For example, in modern western society, colors may be grouped visually into the seven broad spectra of the rainbow, but within this they can be classified much more intricately. Think how artists may distinguish between shades or tones of color, as might interior decorators; while scientists may look at the wavelengths or include the non-visible spectrum. Everyone has a different perspective in terms of how and why they might classify something.

In general each word has its own history telling how the word came to designate something. It is important to note that there is no relationship between the word itself and its meaning (the signified) but it is just a word (signifier) that has a specific sound image used to differentiate it from other words within the same language system.

hope that this helps

Sometimes "truth" CAN be really funny!......

Look them up in the dictionary! Most often all words have their origins listed as well. My guess would be either Latin or Greek etc..... The root of most words gives a clear indication of the "why" that you're asking.

Because everyone needs a reference point. Like, if everyone in the world said different words to describe colors, then no one would understand unless you had the color right in front of you and you pointed to it. It's just rather convenient to make up words and be like, "Okay. This color is now going to be called black." Stuff like that.

That's what I think.. hope that helps.

because within our species we are looking for conformity. if your father said ' this son is how you wipe your ***'. that is the way you will do it for the rest of your life, and that's how your kids will wipe their asses, so on and so on. now, you are totally free to change the way you wipe your ***, and to call color black-green, you just have to find some people who will agree with you that what you're doing is the way it should be done. what we are doing and what we have done had proved to be up for revision once in a while. but one thing for certain, i can not picture myself wiping my *** any different than i do today.

When dyes were first invented, black was a difficult color to make, so they used a really dark green of a really dark blue.
Ashed were first tried to get a black color, but it's mixed with fat (so it will absorb into fabric) you get soap, so it makes good eyeliner (ancient Egyptians used it) but not fabric dye.

So we can't joke about colors or even your question now? Sheesh, you surely are a dour, high-maintenance individual. :p

Seriously, why don't you grab an etymological dictionary? You'll save yourself and everyone else valuable time.

you have to ask a linguist, but black is not called black in all languages , humans have developed words to describe objects ( square circle etc) and words to describe colors , each in his own language
