BESIDES GOING TO THE DOCTOR--I'm looking for answers. My husband has been complaining of stuffiness and a very slight fever for the last couple days. Today, his ear started to ache. He's been taking Sudafed regularly for the last 3 days, and Nyquil at night. We can't make it to a doctor because our insurance doesn't kick in until August, so I'm looking for some home remedies or possibly something somebody did that helped them.

Serious answers only, please. I don't want anybody answering who just wants two stinking points. This is a serious question.

check out:www.mamashealth.com/allergies/sinunitis.asp for some suggestions...i'd also suggest having him drink a warm cup of chamomile tea with a teaspoon of honey-it helps alleviate the swelling since chamomile is a natural anti-inflammatory plant....perhaps tylenol sinus combo might help-it comes in a pack for daytime and nite time relief-give it a shot! it sounds like your husband may need some antibiotics to clear up this infection that may have started out as sinus issue...i understand your current situation with the insurance...perhaps try another doctor under a different health plan?
garlic is another very potent source used to rid a lot of germ creating pathogens-you can have him suck on a clove-i know it sounds nasty but after the initial sting, it will bring the relief! that may rid him of the symptoms he's experiencing till he can get to see a proper doctor! hope he feels better!

I know a way to relieve the pain from an earache. Put some rock salt or Kosher salt in a pan and heat it up until it it pretty hot. Then carefully put the hot salt in a soc, and then tie the soc shut. Now, place the soc with the heated salt on the ear that is causing the most pain, if both ears hurt, then alternate the soc between ears. The salt and the heat, some how, draws out the infection, that is causing the pain.
I know this sounds hard to believe, but nothing gets rid of an earache faster, or more effectively, than this home remedy. Earaches can be incredibly painful, so try this as soon as possible, and please, let me know, how long it takes for your husband to feel better. I guarantee this to work.

Sounds like a mild case of the flu. It can take a few days for it to really kick in which would explain the recent earache. If the over-the-counter drugs aren't working try switching to a different brand. Your local pharmacist should be able to recommend something for you without charging a doctor's consultation fee. One with anti-inflammatorys will help with the muscle pain too. The best thing your husband can do is rest for a couple of days to allow his body to fight off the infection and recover.
However, if the earache becomes really painful and pain-killers don't overcome it, he could have an inner ear infection in which case you will need to see a doctor to get prescription medicine to help clear it. Otherwise he could burst his eardrum and have decreased hearing or even hearing loss in one or both ears.
Good luck :)

Can't really help you with the fever thing. Stuffiness try purchasing a Rhino Horn (drug store or homeopathic store) that can be used to clear nasal passages. Ear Ache try a beeswax ear candle to draw out the wax buildup - the heat also helps, but ask for instructions and follow closely. (homeopathic stores and some health food - organic stores sell). Sounds like it may be a sinus infection that is only getting worse. Maybe a vaporizor or humidifier (I always mix them up, but whichever is cold air as the warm air causes bacteria growth). Some doctors have a sliding pay scale for people without insurance. Not sure what to do about the medication - usually doctors don't have samples of this type of medication.

I'm looking in myBC health guide: Try heat by using a warm face cloth or a heating pad on low. Make sure he doest not go to sleep when using the heating pad. If he has had a cold lately it also says, colds can cause the eustacian tube, which connects the middle ear to the throat to swell and close. When the eustacian tube is closed, fluid builds up in the middle ear. Bacteria or viruses then grow in the fuild, causing a middle ear infection.
The fluid that is trapped in the middle ear puts presure on the eardrum. In some cases, the presure may continue to build until the eardrum ruptures. A single eardrum rupture usually is not serious and rarely causes hearing loss. The ear drum usually heals on its own once the infection clears. However, repeated eardrum rupures can lead to permanent hearing loss. symptoms of a middle ear infection include ear pain, dizziness, ringing or a feeling of fulness in the ear, hearing loss, fever, headache, and runny nose.

Take Ibuprophen with food. I think he can take up to 800 mg at a time. It will make the painful swelling go down in his inner ear.
Use a heating pad and have him lay his head on the infected side down.
Keep his head elevated if possible to prevent ear pressure.
I used to have ear pain so bad I could not close my mouth I started getting ear aches in my 20's.
This all helped.
Don't put anything in his ear unless a physician prescribes it.

Perhaps peroxide could help. It loosens up any thing deep inside the ear. Let it stop bubbling and have a towel handy. Usually I lay down on the bed with my head on the towel to one side. That way, when I turn my head over,it runs onto the towel. It may not help, but it certainly can't hurt him. If this does not work, I would suggest to go to a free clinic where he may get some relief.Good luck, Sincerely!!!!!!

To sooth an earache quickly, just use a hair dryer (on the low setting) and let the warm air soothe the ache or as my mother use to do Just drip a few drops of peroxide into your ear. Then tip your head and let the peroxide drain out. :)

Go to a 24 hour pharmacy such as Savon... then tell the pharmacist his symptoms and perhaps he can recommend a medication. It seems to me he has an ear infection, the local pharmacy has drops that might help. Check the website below, it gives you good info on how to treat it at home.
