First, download a program called "Belarc Advisor". It will analyze your computer quickly and give you a report of all the hardware and software installed, and it's free. In the report, there will be a section called "Memory Modules" that describes your existing memory. It will also tell you what kind of motherboard you have.
Next, go to the website mwave.com. You can find the memory you need there at a great price, and if you still don't know what you need, just call them up and give them the information from Belarc Advisor and they'll help you out. I've had excellent service consistently from this company since about 1998.
When your memory arrives, turn your computer off and look for a slot that has the same size and shape of circuit board as your new memory. Install your new memory next to it. Make sure the tabs click fully into place so you'll know it's seated all the way.
That's it!
DO NOT buy your memory from a retail store like Best Buy or Staples. They will charge you well over double what you'll pay almost anywhere online. Also, don't pay anybody more than $45 to install it, it's a super simple task and no tech has any business charging more than the minimum hourly rate for it.

Based on the questions asked, you are probablly not qualified to do this on your own. Most computer store will do this for you for a fee. Perhaps it will be better if you let someone else do this and avoid frustrations and possible damage to your computer.
With that said, you do not want to buy memory based on price alone. One of my personal favorite is crucial at www.crucial.com. They have a web based tool that will give you the right module based on make and type of your computer.

Once you open the box you should see it. It is usually in a white or cream colored slot. You may have four identical slots and 1 or 2 might be filled. Pull one out (helps to read instructions) and see what kind it is and purchase a similar one. It is skinny (about 4 inches long and 1 inch wide).

There are two types of memory RAM and the Hard Disk
Additional ram would go into slots in the motherboard.
Additional hard drives can be put either inside, or you can even have external hard drives.
If you have no previous experience of hardware, I would suggest you seek professional support. Once you've watched someone work, the next time you can add it yourself.

First of all ram is not that expensive.
If you want 512 for: $40.99 go to:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145026
If you want 1 gigabyte which I personally recommend for: $81.99 go to:
