It all depends on your passport.

If you are from another Arab country, it's great. Good salary, Muslim environment, very nice.

If you are from a Western country, it can be nice, if you are willing to turn a blind eye to exploitation and don't mind the horrific drivers on the roads. Usually, Westerners get good salaries and many times they can afford services like maids that they could never afford back home.

If you are from India and have the qualifications to get a middle class job in Dubai, you'll probably love it. The salaries are better than in India, and since the majority of the population is South Asian, it's a lot like living in an Indian culture that has been transported to a Western city. You'll be a third class citizen, for sure, (behind the Arabs and Westerners), but basically, life will be nice.

The same is mostly true if you're from the Philippines and can get a middle class job. You may find that you are over-qualified for the job you can get in Dubai, but the salaries are good and there is a thriving Filipino culture. If you can stomach being a 4th class person in exchange for good money, you'll do OK.

If you can only get a laborer visa, there are a lot of uncertainties. It's the norm for private companies with local owners to put laborers on "probation" for the first 3 months. That means, you work without pay for 3 months. You pay for a national health insurance card, but your employer may never issue you the card, so if you get sick, you'll need to beg for money for health care. You'll be housed 4-16 people to a room. You'll be working 80-100 hour weeks, and get as little as 2-3 days off per year. Much of the time, your work environment will not have AC. If you are overcome from the heat, your employer might get you to the hospital in time to save you, and might pay the bills. Or not. It's very normal for local employers to be behind on paying salaries, and it's illegal for laborers to have a work stoppage or strike in order to request back wages. If you have a family back home depending on your income, they may go hungry for 6-8 months while you are begging for your salary. Friends of mine were deported when they submitted complaints to the labor department about delayed salaries. So after working for 8 months with no money for your own food, you could be shipped out of the country with nothing to show for it but loans back home that you took out in order to pay for your work visa. Or, you might get lucky and get paid reasonably frequently. But I knew many, many laborers in Dubai (from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the Philippines), and none of them got their salaries on time all the time.

For women applying to be housemaids, Dubai can be a very dangerous place to work. If you get a contract with a Western family, and you're willing to work hard, you may do OK and be paid well for your efforts. But many maids working for non-Western families are beaten, raped, murdered, etc. Many run away from abuse only to end up abandoned, alone without money or passports and are then forced into prostitution. They soon get AIDs and are eventually deported or die.

So, some people have a good time and make good money, but that's highly dependent on passport and type of job. For holders of Arab and Western passports, as well as for Indians of the middle class it'll probably work out. But others should be very wary before signing a contract. Especially if you have to go in debt to do so.

For starters, it's not that easy to have a work here in Dubai. As of this date, there are a lot of visit visa people competing each other in order to secure a good job. Because of this high demand for job, the tendency is that employers are giving low salaries.

Somehow, Dubai is also a nice place to work coz majority of the people here can speak English, though some companies would prefer those who speak Arabic. There are still a lot of work opportunities here in Dubai coz a lot of businesses are being established. Dubai is the center for business here in the Middle East.

If you have a job offer, a good salary that befits your lifestyle, a few friends who are here and you are young and single, or all of the above. then Dubai is for you. Otherwise, if you just come here on visit visa and count on lady luck to hand you that perfect job, then it might turn out to be a nightmare for you. Thousands come here everyday on visit visa to try their so-called luck and more often than not, the reality is that they can't really find a good job or a good salary, so they just take what is offered to them, even indecent proposals.

Dubai has had a huge transformation since I last went there so I should let others who have been in the past 5 years tell you, but one thing you should definitely do whilst there on one of the days is a desert safari. That was one of the highlights of my trip to the region.
