It seems like a Latinos and Black folks are hating on each other and I read some recent articles in the LA Post about Black/Brown tensions in Southern California.

Problems between the two biggest minorities in the country are bound to arise.

It used to be that blacks were the largest minority, and also the most verbal about issues. (Example: Why do people recall the fight for civil rights from blacks such as Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X?). They were all about being on top.

Now, however, the Latin community is hot on their tails. More of them are immigrating into the country and getting educations and professional jobs. In addition, it has been projected by the U.S. Census Department that Latinos will outpopulated blacks by the year 2010.

When you're a member of a minority trying to make it in (stereotypically) a "white man's world", you may find yourself willing to step on many toes to get there.

Hope it helps! ^_^

well generally from what Ive seen here in NYC throughout my life there are instances in which both get along and others where they don't. I've seen these two groups go at it by race by color and gangs and high schools against each other. even amongst many Latinos there are tensions based on appearance and color that vary and differ from ethnicity to ethnicity. there are many ppl who are Afro-Latino and those who are half and half. Ive heard blks bad mouth latinos and latinos bad mouth blks in Spanish. i guess it all depends...but i think for the most part Latinos n blks get along but only most of them. most latinos even tho they wont admit it are part blk at least through the mulatto mixes...which is by the mostly White men(spanish)and blk concubines, which would explain why they are the "brown" community.

Blacks and Latinos have a lot of issues. EVERYONE has a lot of issues. We'll not make any progress when we frame such things along racial or ethnic lines. If we instead decide and maintain defining issues along ECONOMIC lines, the paradigm will change and there can be more agreement and cohesion.

Perpetuating the racial / ethnic divide keeps these groups relatively weak.

And who benefits from THAT?

Personally, I've met and befriended many latin people in my life, and I must say that I've never seen more racism against black people than I have from Mexicans. Not all of them of coarse, but many.

Here's something interesting to read.

Although that's one side of the answer, because that doesn't account for the tension from the black community to the brown. I'm not quite sure I could answer that.

I guess that all depends on where you grow up. I personally have never had a problem with anybody unless they have done something to me that was not right.
