Could possibly be sciatica, which is not an inflammation of the sciatic nerve, but a problem with the muscle(s) in the area around the nerve (could be a tight muscle, no inflammation present). The shooting pain is a classic symptom. Possibly subluxation of L5 vertebrae or SI joint. I would check with a chiropractor and/or see a massage therapist. Of course, it's impossible to know since I can't see you or talk to you, nor can I diagnose because I am not a doctor. I can only take a stab at some possibilities from what you've said.

This could be pinched nerves, herniated discs, or inflamation. The best way to find a condition, is to get x-rays. Especially when the pain is present.
A good chiropractic might be helpful.
Dr. Gucciardo in Howard Beach, New York is said to be an excellent one.

It could be inflamed sciatic nerve or pinched nerve, you should
have it checked out. If it is sciatica, I feel sorry for you because
that can be pretty darn painful.
