Well it really depends on your comfort, price range, and style. For your needs the most expensive bass may not equal the best sound and comfort.

Some of the best sounds are due to amplification; Some of the best bass guitar sounds come from valve amplifiers, and as all guitarists and bass players know, valve amps distort rather musically when you drive them hard.

You need to find the right combo, and I would suggest researching the amps and effects packages used by those you admire most.

Have you heard of Line 6 products.Excellent.They have amp modeling and guitar modeling for some of the best guitar sounds ever. The POD xt live for bass is really cool as you can use it in front of your rig,or you can go direct to the board for recording and excellent quality. It also comes with a usb port for direct recording to your computer and updates via the internet. You can also plug their Variax guitar series directly to the unit and open your possibilities even more.Their guitars and basses model several different of the best sounds available. If you like flexibility and the power to have all that sound at your control, then Line 6 products would be my recommendation.

I swear by warwick basses. Their rock bass series is inexpensive but versitile. I've owned several of their basses and love their deep, rich tone. You can play any style of music with a Warwick and they are built to last.

definately go with gibson. they're pretty expensive, but they're the best. if you want something a little cheaper. epiphone's are pretty good too. i have an ibanez bass. it's a pretty good bass, and it had a pretty good price. But if you want the absolute best, go with a gibson.
