When drawing and painting an object realistically, it is imitation. However, when art broadened up to many ways of painting and drawing (abstract form), it is not because it expressed itself various ways and it's original in its creativity, it's no longer an imitation.

Art is an expression of our conscious and unconscious impressions. Sometimes it is an attempt at imitation...more often interpretation.

Everything humans do is imitation of nature. We think too highly of ourselves because we philosophize. All is in the mind. All non-natural images like 45 degree angles and perfect tringles and cicles are just concepts of reality taken by us and distorted. What seperates us from primates is we know how to use our thumbs. If they ever discover how to do it by themselves, they would become ...human eventually.Oh. We already did that.
