How dangerous is a can of worms really.


I did not know where to put this question, but I like the answers in this section most.

If it would be to avoid causing "pain" why didn't the phrase "I don't EVEN want to open that Indian basket of cobras!" catch on?

I have heard it and never really gave it that much thought.

Hahaha, you are right to question such a silly figure of speech! Indeed maybe we should start saying the cobra line, makes so much more sense, however as you may well know as americans we don't ritually make sense.

Opening a can of worms refers to a subject or condition that exsists between two or more people. Sometimes one doesnt wish to go there for reasons of intense dislike or maybe causing lots of pain to all involved. So they avoid the issue...........

I have heard it and used it. It is not about danger, it's about starting a topic that spills all over and grows and is hard to contain, such as it would be difficult to pick up a spilled can of worms wiggling all over.
