In the year of 1976, I flew in from a visit to the Middle East, and missed the Rolling Stones by one day. I was traveling alone, and left my suitcase in a locker at a bus station, and slept in Hostels.
One Hostel I stayed over night at, the Milkeyweg, I slept with my Birkenstocks under my pillow, and listened to the live music all night. I was in the family section, and remember seeing children with their parents..
I bought a nice Chillum. It was for smoking weed.
I met two guys traveling around the country in a VW Van. One was Australian, and one Japanese. We spent time at the Golden Temple Restaurant, drinking Yogi Tea. I was allowed to copy a couple of their recipes for the Health food restaurant I was managing across the street from Hewlett Packard in Cupertino, Calif. U.S.A. Across the street in a small showroom window was an old Harley Davidson Motorcycle.

I sat at an upscale bar and drank and smoked quality weed with a guy who was dating a woman who lived near Santa Cruz, California, where I used to hang out, and also, where Jerry Garcia played in his first years in Campbell Calif.
The next day, he took me to Brussels,
on the way I remember seeing Windmills. He helped me change my Airline ticket, so I could do some more hopping around via. different flights back to the U.S.A.
I visited many areas via the bus system, which was very clean and easy to use. Taxi was also a good source to travel at night.
I visited the Red Light district at night, and saw the girls sitting in their little glass window showcases.( Their living quarters also)
Each one with different decoration, or just a simple elegant chair, sophisticated, pretty and waiting. (not for me).
The flea market was very interesting, with some turn of the Century items, old collectibles, and clothing that fit the occasion.
Many travelers gathered at a central area near the market and exchanged imformation about their country of origin , and their travel experiences, and places to visit while in Amsterdam.
There were many sidewalk Cafe's serving Espresso. The streets were clean, with open air markets, and lots of fresh fruit and flowers. Everything was neat and orderly, yet friendly and inviting. Overall, a worthwhile visit.

It is a wonderful city filled with all kinds of culture and history. there is the Anne Frank House, the Van Rihn museums, canals, bicycles everywhere, the famous red light district. And of course, there are Coffee houses and Koffe houses. I forgot which is which - one, you can purchase marijuana there, the other sells. . .coffee. I'm not into drugs, so it didn't really matter to me. You must know that marijuana is NOT legal there - it is TOLERATED. It's a funny term they have called "beilein" - its sort of an acceptance - or like nobody said really it was illegal, but nobody said it was legal, so we will just accept it. The thing is, is that marijuana is to people there what alcohol is here - not that big a deal. If you want it, you can get it with little hassle. Get drunk in the streets, and you might have a problem, here in the US. Same thing for Amsterdam - walk around drunk or high, you might have problems. They have wonderful cigars if you're into those. The cheese is phenomenal in Amsterdam, and the beer is much more potent. The transportation is great - most people bike or walk around. The public transportation will get you anywhere you want. Make sure you see some lovely side towns such as Haarlem, or Zandvoort a Zee. Make a trip to The Hague - its very interesting to see. Enjoy.

I always go to Amsterdam to go shopping. It's great; there are so many shops in the city and most of them are even open on sundays so if you don't live too far away you'll always have a chance of going shopping. Another thing I (personally) like best about Amsterdam is that the best artists from around the world go there to play their shows (the rest of the country is kind of ignored by foreign artists and some of them even think that Amsterdam is the country =P). So I go there for concerts as well. It's just a great city, there's a good vibe and lots of things to do.

I went in Nov of 2004, and is a great place. I was there for 1 night and part of 1 day, and we were able to take in a lot of sites, from the redlight district to anne frank's house. Beautiful city, and even the redlight district was nice. Not too pushy, just interesting and a different perspective on life.

a guy in my class last semester went during spring break....it is a pothead paradise...he literally said you can walk up to the bar and ask for an oz of this, a half oz of that....and he said the "red light" district is filled with BEAUTIFUL prostitutes, not ugly ones....he also went on a couple of tours and said the country is very nice too....and overall, besides the drugs, he had a good time....
