It is highly questionable that this snake was more scared of me than I was of it. We both moved pretty fast. I live in the suburban Chicago area.

Most likely a garter snake. They are quite common in this area.

Sounds like somebody dumped a pet. I don't know what you mean by lengthwise, but if the stripes were like rings around the snake's body, it could have been a coral snake or a king snake. Coral snakes are venomous, while king snakes are not.

Sounds as if it may be a hog nose or common cow snake. Call your local extension office and describe the snake. They should be able to answer your questions and possibly send out a agent to relocate it without harm.

It is what we as kids called a stripped water racer.It is harmless and very,very pretty.

you should take it to your local humaine society and ask them what to do with it! they might even take it!
