ok, heres the story. since its summer, and i'm going to the senior high school next year, i was thinking about changing my style a bit. the only problem is that last year i wore mostley black and all my shirts had a band on them, and this year i wanted to incorperate some different colored stuff (maybe even sum american eagle stuff). pretty much i want to redo my image. now my problem is that i'm worrying that doing so would alienate me from my friends and my crowd, and they'll call me a "sell-out". i've never been one to worry what other people thought of me, but if it were my own friends, then it would kind of bother me. i'm not COMPLETELY getting rid of my band tees, but i'm going for a more casual look than before, i feel that my other clothes labeled me as a "goth" and it kept me from meeting any other people that might be scared off by my dark appearance. my question to you yahoo users is whats a good way i could do this? i'm not asking you to solve my problem, just want opinions

well here's my opinion. I think if i were u i wouldn't immediately change the way u dress. Try to incorporate some new stuff (cacky pants/shorts w/ ur band shirts or some nicer shirts w/ what u regularly wear) I just mean that i wouldn't make an immediate change to ur look, unless ur just completely sick of ur style right now.
And about ur friends, it may sound corny, but if they're really ur friends they may give u a hard time and may take i while for them to get use to but they can deal w/ it. A few of my dearest friends dress the way u describe ur style, yet my style is all over the place and i rarely look like i fit in w/ them. However, we're still great friends and we don't care how the others dress. All i mean is that i'm sure things can all work out.
I'm sry this was so long, and it may sound silly, but i hope it helps. GOOD LUCK!

Have you thought about making a progressive change? Try to wear stuff that isn't quite goth, but isn't different either. Might I suggest jeans and a black tee and black shoes (converse, vans, ect.)to start of with? (Or something along those lines) Then after a while, start to lean in your new 'style'. Your friends might appreciate the gradual shift rather than a sudden one. This could also give you time to decide weather or not you actually want to change your style, or just stay in between. Anyway, that is all I can think of. Hope it helps!

A lot of these answers are telling you to not care what other people think! That's absurd everyone wants to be accepted and everyone cares (to a certain extent) what other people think. So here's my take- its a new school(youre becoming more mature) and it is a good thing to add color and variety. You can tell it to your current buddies just like this. You might want to do a half on half thing (at least once in a while) and don't settle for any one look. Just wear stuff you like. Hey try Goodwill its funny but you get the coolest "weird" shirts there. I had a guy in high school who did this and told everyone about it (everybody liked him it made him cool and let him stand out at just the right volume).

I see where your'e coming from, I can smell what your cooking.
Sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders.
It comes down to this: If you have a good personality and you are good at making friends then how you dress won't really matter a whole lot.
I was a punker in HS but I also played baseball and was on the debate team. I had the whole spectrum of clicks covered. My parties had everyone represented because they were all my friends even though I dressed "weird". At one point I did chill my image a bit so it wasn't so hard for people to swallow.
Stopped spiking my hair up and took the spikes off my leather but I kept all my friends, played in a punk band and still was considered to be hardcore by my friends.

You're not a junior high kid anymore...why dress like one? High school is where you define who YOU are. So what...sometimes you're a dark rock dude...sometimes you're a guy the cheerleader looks at twice as she walks by. You've lived the other identity, now it's time to show other parts of yourself. If your friends don't like it, then they are not true friends. They need to mature as you are maturing...hopefully they will someday.
Wear not so sloppy jeans and a concert T-shirt one day. The next day wear the same jeans and a jean shirt. Couple of days later wear jeans and an American Eagle T-shirt. Wear lighter solid color T-shirts. Wear combat boots one day, cowboy boots another day, black running shoes another day.
That way, people won't put you in a box and say you are this...or this. They will say, that guy...he has his own style.
(stephanie s and ur sweetest...those are the longest sentences I have ever seen in my entire life...lol)

good style stores (like the style u want to change to) are:
american eagle (duh)
aeropostale (no, its not just 4 preppy girls, they have a lot of cool stuff 4 guys)
abercrombie & fitch
hollister
target
wal*mart (and spell it right andy f...gosh)
gadzooks
the gap
old navy
hey, band shirts r really in as long as theyre not weirdo bands but that depends on where u come from. (if its a weirdo band)
hey, u r cool 2 want to meet new ppl, to step out of ur comfort zone a bit even at the mercy of ur friends opinions. a big shut up goes to "no name" he just got reported!!hey about ur new details no u didnt describe urself as "goth" why do ppl assume the worst??
psps yeah, dont go too preppy, that really does make guys look gay...

Have you got some really old black t-shirts, with appropriate band names on them? Like ones you couldn't wear anymore but still like the bands? My suggestion would be to cut these small patches off the old shirts that say the band name, and then stitch them onto your jeans. This way you can completely redo your image and shirts, and get out of the black, but not out of the crowd.

Don't completely turn preppy-casual. Gradually begin wearing your band-tees less and less, and buy a couple American Eagle tees. If your friends seriously care about you, they won't mind the style change. By the way, I love American Eagle, and it looks great on guys!

Do what you want to do, don't worry about what the "cool kids" say or do. the onlu person you have to be happy with at this stage of your life is you. all those kids whom may look down on or judge you are in for a serious reality check once they graduate and move on to college. In college the entire social structure is changed and all the sudden the people who were at the top of the food chain are nobodys. And the people who were content being themselves are still.
in short do what you want and don't let anybody tell you different.
