Sometimes it feels as though we no longer are interested in thoughtful debate but rather "winning" arguments. Do you agree? How could we change this? Is it possible to move forward together?

The country is divided yes, but thats not the reason people can't talk to eachother. Americans are spoiled, selfish, and generally immature. Instead of intellectual discussion, we resort to name-calling and clicks. Its really sad, but I don't know how to fix it. Maybe we could build a giant hand to slap everyone upside the head or something so that they would shut-up and listen to eachother? (j/k)

I think the the prevailing attitude in the United States is definitely moving from a myriad of opinions to everything is either black or white, right or wrong, night or day. When a society thinks in polar opposites all the wonderful gray areas in between are lost. That is the joy of debate. It is sad that it permeates nearly everything...... "that movie is either great or awful", that sports team is "fantastic or sucks", that politician is "best thing since sliced bread" or "is a lying, cheating so and so". It exists in advertising, education, law, business, politics, the fourth estate, relationships.

Winning arguments is different from debating.

When you argue you want to win so you are not there to prove your points or to learn from the opposition. Only while debating can this occur. And when debating, we must debate facts and knowledgable opinion. That way everyone learns and forward we will go.

Humans are to egotistical to just teach and be taught without labeling it, and requiring agreement.

I think this could be changed by refocusing on similarities rather than differences. Be happy with your self and proceed with life in a manner that is in tune with your belief system.

I also am christian, but I can see messages lost in time. For instance, Remember when Moses was arguing with the Pharaoh of Egypt? He openly and without fear of punishment or death stated, exactly what he believed. The Pharaoh was basically like whatever, go worship your God. The Egyptians considered their religion sacred, and never tried to convert anyone. People went to them and converted. How many cultures in history can say that? I am not trying to say we should all be worshiping Ra, but I am not comfortable forcing beliefs on anyone.

That is exactly what 20/20 was about tonite. It's called polarizing
& the most vicious attacks take place here, on the internet.

Barack Obama said that after hearings & meetings, senators &
congressmen would get together & talk, but that is no longer
the case. He also said it was one of his missions to bring the
members back together.

They also said that we should be fighting the enemy,
not internaly fight each other.

I agree & if the party's would stop bashing each other with
their questions & answers, we could start here.

I tend to blame the Bush administration for this (and yes, I'm a conservative, but NOT a republican). In my opinion, George W. Bush has caused more division between the political parties than any president in recent history, and pushed the US further away from it's European allies than ever before. The sooner this clown is out of office the better.

Yes, I agree. I don't know what to do about it. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to debate: to try to learn something from the other side and vice versa. Maybe two people have been willing to do that, to listen and to be listened to, without calling names or telling half truths or just plain lying. I can't help but get angry and go back at them when that starts. Why does they do it over and over? I just don't get it, but until they're willing to listen as well as insist on being listened to, things will stay the same.

You have a very good point. I do agree. It may not be possible to move forward together. The polemic is too deep, to divided, too filled with insults and closed minds. Better for those of us who desire forward movement to form a third party and bypass all the blithering.

It's impossible to be serious with anyone who uses words such as libtards, neocons, etc. So long as the name calling continues, there will never be debate. All you'll have is just school yard verbal insults that only accomplish making the insulter look stupid, and the insulted not taking what was said seriously.
